National Student Clearing House (NSC)

To enhance the overall student loan program and to simplify the enrollment verification process, an industry-sponsored consortium, the  National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) was established.  The Clearinghouse is a non-profit corporation that provides status and deferment information on behalf of Cornell University to guaranty agencies, lenders, servicers, and the Department of Education's National Student Data System. In addition, NSC provides student enrollment verification to Cornell University.

The NSC process identifies those borrowers who:

  • Withdraw from school and need to begin repayment.
  • Return to school and may be eligible for a deferment.
  • Continue in-school and are eligible for deferment extension.
  • Graduate

Your school's participation in the Clearinghouse provides several benefits to its students, including:

  • Automatic deferments

  • Quicker resolution of paper-based and problem deferments

  • Ability for you to obtain  enrollment verification certificates online to give to student-based service providers (e.g., health insurers, credit issuers, travel companies, etc.)

  • Fewer disruptions to your deferment status when transferring from one participating school to another
